CHIMNEY CROWN REPAIRS IN LEHIGH VALLEY PENNSYLVANIA

A failing Chimney Crown is often the cause of a Roof Leak.

A Chimney Cap or Crown is the masonry surface on top of your Chimney,
sloped downward and away from the Chimneys Flue. The Chimney Cap / Crown can basically be described as the ROOF of your Chimney. Like any other type of Roof, it's main function is to protect against the elements and prevent water from entering into the structure. With Regular Preventative Maintenance, the Chimney Cap will function efficiently. A Poorly Maintained Chimney Cap / Crown will lead to cracks and disintegration of the Mortar Chimney Cap allowing water to penetrate through and into the Chimney structure causing deterioration of the Chimney structures brick and masonry.

Chimney Cap / Crown - Mortar Cap

The deterioration of a Chimney Cap / Crown usually can not be seen from the ground. Where a Chimney Cap would seem to be in good condition from a ground level view, it is only when you get a Roof level view, the Chimney Cap problem can be seen. At one time this Chimney had a Mortar Chimney Cap but it has deteriorated and exposed the top course of bricks to the elements. This may not seen as a problem, but without a Sloped Mortar Chimney Cap, the water that will sit on top of this Chimney and eventually makes it's way down inside the Chimney structure. The water that penetrates the Chimney can cause a lot of damage. One of the concerned is of course a Water Leak finding it's way inside the home, which could result in unnecessary drywall or plaster repair. The other concerned is that the water will saturate the Masonry Mortar that holds the Chimneys bricks together. When that water freezes and thaws, the Chimney Mortar will deteriorate much quicker. The photo of the Chimney Cap bellow (or lack of Chimney Cap) is a good example.

The solution to this is to have a new properly sloped Mortar Chimney Cap installed.
This type of chimney repair will ensure the water will drain off the top of the Chimney. Once the New Chimney Cap has been applied, regular maintenance will extent the life of your new Chimney Cap. We recommend having a new Mortar Chimney Cap applied to the top of your Chimney every 5-10 years. The picture below shows the end result of the chimney repair after the new Mortar Cap has been applied to the top of the Chimney.
